Chapel Seven - The Scourging at the Pillar
The Seventh Chapel of the Sacro Monte di Varese, dedicated to the Scouring at the Pillar, was one of the first to be completed in 1609, thanks to the noble patrons of the arts, Francesco and Girolamo Litta.
The chapel enjoys surprising views over the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte, which can be seen among the houses of the village, encouraging pilgrims on their ascent. The architect, Bernascone carefully chose the position, making the climb up to the chapel an experience that connects to the suffering represented in the Sorrowful Mysteries.
The frescos inside the chapel are the work of Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli, known as “Il Morazzone”, and they represent a sequence of events prior to the scourging, in dialogue with Retti’s statues.
The chapel is also decorated with lunettes containing portraits of those who commissioned it, the Litta brothers, and with frescos in the dome, showing angels that express and contribute to heightening the sense of sorrow.
